Born in 1946 in Brooklyn, Suzanne Santoro moved to Italy in the late 1960s. She was part of the seminal feminist group Rivolta Femminile, alongside Carla Lonzi (1931- 1982) and Carla Accardi (1924-2014). Until the early 1980’s she showed in a lot of exhibition in Italy and New York (in particular with Anina Nosei).
From the early 1980’s she’s been working remotely in her studio in Capranica, near Rome. 2024 and 2025
mark her return with a series of exhibitions organized by Lovay Fine Arts.
Santoro’s artistic practice has been a rich journey into the realm of female representation and its hidden structures. From her radical early appropriations until the recent metaphoric images, she has dedicated her life to the poetics and the politics of a female gaze on women. Informed by her studies of the partial erasure of women’s representation from western art history, Santoro is questioning: What is shown and how
do we see it?
